6. Joint research and technology development
A midterm report was made by every project of the first call.
The results will be published in one of the next newsletters.
A second research call is under preparation and will be published beginning of
2009.
Among the projects of the first call is also the “Cost Oriented Robots for
Manufacturing Automation”, a cooperation between Vienna TU and the Faculty of
Mechanical Engineering of the UP, which has had its inauguration recently in
Prishtina.
On 24.12.2008 there was a very successful presentation and demonstration of
the Industrial Robot named ROBINKOS-1 that took place at facilities of the
Technical Faculties, University of Prishtina (UP).
Students and professors attended with great interest the presentation of the
Industrial Robot ROBIKNOS-1.
This event was also recorded by two public televisions in Kosovo: RTK and RTV 21
as well as the interviews given for them.
ROBIKOS-1 was designed and constructed by Prof. Dr. Arbnor Pajaziti and the
students of the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering (FME) at the Laboratories of
the FME, UP.
The industrial robot ROBINKOS-1 has three axes about which motion can occur:
rotation in a clockwise direction on the unit on its base, arm extension or
contraction and arm up or down; also the gripper can open or close. These
movements are actuated by the use of pneumatic cylinders by solenoid controlled
valves. Thus the clockwise rotation of the unit might result from the piston in
a cylinder being extended and the counter clockwise direction by its retraction.
Likewise the upward movement of the arm might result from the piston in a linear
cylinder being extended and the downward motion from it retracting; the
extension of the arm by the piston in another cylinder extending and its return
movement by the piston retracting. The gripper can be opened or closed by the
piston in a linear cylinder extending or retracting, showing a basic mechanism
that could be used. PLC has been used to control the solenoid valves and hence
the movements of the robot unit.
The demonstration of ROBINKOS-1 showed the advantages in technology and cost
aspects of future robots that would be designed, developed and constructed by
FME Staff and in connection with partners from industry.
The robot cell ROBINKOS-1 is expected to be employed in new SMEs who will
express interest to have production lines with automation processes.
